After questioning why military medical corps training during World War II and the Korean War could not be applied to the civilian community to improve the standard of civilian care, Dr. J.D. “Deke” Farrington and Dr. Sam Banks developed a trauma training school for the Chicago Fire Department. The training school served as the prototype to what later became the first EMT-Ambulance training program. Dr. Farrington was involved with the design of the EMT-Ambulance training program for United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) employees. Farrington worked with Rocco Morando, Oscar Hampton, Walter Hoyt, Walter Hunt, Robert Oswald, Peter Safar, and Joseph Territo to develop the USDOT program.
