Dr. Norman E. McSwain

1937-2015

Born in Alabama in 1937, Norman Ellsworth McSwain, Jr., was drawn to medicine as a young man. Legend has it that as he waited at the doctor’s office for a physical for the boy scouts, it dawned on him that he was going to be a surgeon. He may not have known in that moment, but his dedication to medicine, specifically to trauma care and the human experience, would change the course of history.

McSwain graduated from Albertville High School in 1955 in Albertville, Alabama. He entered undergraduate studies at The University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee where he completed his Bachelor of Science in 1959. He returned to Alabama to attend the University of Alabama School of Medicine where he completed his formal studies in 1963 and his internship at Bowman-Gray (now Wake Forest University) in 1965.
