Background

The Byrd Ambulance Company was founded by Jess Byrd in 1961 in Zanesville, Ohio. Stations were operated in McConnellsville, Newcomerstown, Cambridge, Galion, Shelby, Mansfield, Bucyrus, and Findley. These were a consortium of ambulance services that has previously been operated by funeral homes. The company was owned by Byrd until October 1991 and then it was sold, after changing hands a few times the last station, which was Mansfield, closed in March 2020.
