1800s: AMBULANCE: HORSE DRAWN (REAR VIEW)

This vintage photo shows the rear of a typical horse drawn ambulance that was used in New York City during the 19th century. The stretcher was designed to slide out so a person who had been carried out in the arms of a family member or other acquaintance could be easily laid down. There was no treatment equipment aboard ambulances of this era. Usually, only the driver responded with the carriage.
