Background

Used in the 1960s through 1970s in American Red Cross Advanced First Aid classes, the long wooden spine board was one of the training devices that would be seen in real-life situations as well. The spine board was used on ambulances until the threat of blood borne disease pathogens became a reality. When it was determined the wooden boards could not be effectively decontaminated to eliminate the threat, the wooden boards were replaced with polycarbonate ones that are still used today.
